To accurately read a license plate, it is crucial to have the best image of the license plate for the read to work on. Employing conventional security or surveillance cameras for number plate capturing, will give good results under ideal conditions of diffuse sunlight. There are however other conditions that cause a severe degradation of image quality and a consequent reduction in accuracy. Such conditions include:

- Headlight or brake lights dazzles the camera
- Strong sunlight dazzles the camera or put the license plate in the shade
- Strong reflections cause ‘glint’
- Rain or other environmental conditions can obscure the view

Intertraff has developed WalzCAM™, to ensure that the image is clear and bright, even under adverse conditions.

WalzCAM™ is a Vehicle License Plate Capture Camera expressively designed for 24 hours a day number plate recognition.

It comprises a high resolution monochrome CCD camera with high sensitivity in the infra-red, surrounded by 240 IR LEDs.

The WalzCAM is available for immediate use in diverse applications, such as Journey Time Monitoring, Congestion charging, Tolling, Surveys, Stolen vehicle recognition, Customs controls, Access control and Car park management, vehicle routing and entrance and exit barrier control. It includes provision for operation with control car park barriers.

Each unit incorporates:

Integral monochrome camera module, with lens and optical band-pass filter

Integral infrared (IR) light emitting diode (LED) illuminator which compensates for sunlight and vehicle headlights

Power supply unit

The unit is environmentally sealed to IP67 to protect against all weather conditions. The LED illuminator used in the WalzCAM™ have been assessed to Safety Standards IEC 60825-1:1993 Amendment 2 dated 2001-01 and BS EN 60825-1:1994, with Amendments 1 and 2

WalzCAM_25: for license plate capturing for up a distance of 10 meters.
WalzCAM_50: for license plate capturing for up a distance of 20 meters.

All the distances quoted refer to standard UK number plates which are retro-reflective. The distances for other Nationality plates may differ according to the size and reflectivity of the plate - but Intertraff will be happy to advise on the suitability of WalzCAM for your specific scheme.
