BlackBox model A accepts one camera only while BlackBox model B supports two cameras. Each camera controls one lane of traffic. So if you need to monitor two lanes of traffic contemporarily you would need the B model.

We suggest to install the first camera in the car front area and the second camera in the rear.The camera installed in the front, monitors all the license plates which are ahead while the camera set in the rear reads the number plates which are following the vehicle where BlackBox is installed. Any other configuration, such as, two cameras installed in the rear, is possible. Anyway any camera set in the rear needs a pan & tilt to be moved by the Operator.

BlackBox camera mounts a ¼' CCD sensor with 73.8 mm zoom lens and a resolution of 570 TV lines.

You need to install an infrared camera such our WalzCAM to read the license plates in the dark. Unfortunately there is no chance to read the number plates in the dark with a colour camera.

A PCI Frame Grabber card with four video input is used by BlackBox.

Through a GSM modem, the BlackBox database can be updated remotely and in real time. This offers to the Operator the opportunity to transmit a new stolen vehicle number plate to each BlackBox installation deployed on the territory from the Central Office whenever a new car has been stolen.

BlackBox has a powerful database which handles contemporarily 10 different archives. Operator can set up the stolen vehicle archive, the bus lane archive, the restricted area archive … to mention the few. It’s possible to predefine each archive as “Black” if Operator wants to be alerted whether the license plate read is found in the archive (black list) or “White” e.g. in case Operator wants to receive an alert message if the plate is found in the archive (white list). Any archive can be sep up as active or in-active at will.

The BlackBox Manager is a Win32 software application which is required to update the BlackBox archives. Basically the Operators set up the archives and run the necessary records updating in the BlackBox Manager. When it’s required, the archives present in the BlackBox Manager are uploaded through a network connection or a simple floppy disk to each BlackBox installation. By the way, if the BlackBox has a GSM modem installed, the archive updating can be performed remotely and in real time.

It's a quite exciting experience. The main Black Box window which reports the image of the stolen vehicle is frozen while an audio alert message is played. At the same time the writing STOLEN! starts flashing.

Recognition rate depends on many factors: ambient lighting, camera setting, exposure and above all camera… It’s crucial to install a proper ANPR camera such our WalzCAM or any similar camera. Intertraff Black Box can read correctly the 98% - 99% of all the license plates passing through the camera field of view.

It is crucial to set the size of the image correctly, either by changing the lens or by altering the camera aim. The width of a number plate should be approximately 25% of image width at the nominal point where it is to be recognized. With the BlackBox the camera to the vehicle license plate distance should be not higher than 15-20 meters.

BlackBox is able to read correctly a license plate of vehicles travelling over 200 Km/h (125 mph).

BlackBox is actually working successfully in 30 different countries but with the right file tuning its recognition ability can be quickly extended.

To update our recognition software we need an AVI which should contain at least 300 number plates.

Not yet. We currently consider this market too small to proceed with primary software modifications which this task requires.

BlackBox does not need an external trigger. The ANPR software simply analyses each video frame looking for a license plate to read.
